Causes of Aging Reversed in Mice, Are We Next?

It is common for everyone to age, no one can escape the effects of aging. What about the movie stars who appear to make time stand still as well as their skin? Many of them have secrets to expose about their natural beauty, scientists recently discovered an approach that reverses the effects of aging which may help us achieve similar aging styles as public figures.

The study published in the journal Cell reports that in mice, they were capable of restoring communication between a cell’s mitochondria and nucleus. This allowed aging mice to naturally revive old cells and make their bodies youthful and energetic again. Researchers are optimistic that boosting cells in people can help a body regulate cells that it once did when the person was in their 20s or 30s.

These elements are to be tested as early as this year, and hopefully have innovative ways to help aging bodies regenerate.

What Can I Do to Age Gracefully?

Thousands of skin creams and lotions all promote they have the Fountain of Youth inside their ingredients. Though there may be some positive effects with glow and hydration, they cannot effectively replenish damaged skin, aging spots or acne scars for long-term results. Many people seem to have a grasp of aging, leaving us in the dark. They are not aging better, they are simply aging smarter.

Here are some helpful tips to help you age gracefully:

  • Wear less makeup
  • Reduce sodium to 20 percent or less in daily diet
  • Watch less TV
  • Let your hair grow naturally
  • Wear more sunscreen
  • Quit smoking and limit alcoholic drinks

There are also numerous opportunities to indulge in face and neck rejuvenation treatments. A professional medical clinic can administer dermal fillers, chemical peels, microdermabrasion and laser treatments. We all have our little secrets of beauty, how we choose to use them is up to us. Here is to a healthy and youthful looking you!

Is Your Sleep Giving You Wrinkles?

Most people know the importance of a good night’s sleep, which helps keep your mind sharp and your skin refreshed. After a late night and little sleep, everyone has noticed the tired and puffy appearance that takes over your face. But what if your sleep patterns were actually giving you wrinkles? The truth is, that just might be the case for many people. In fact, dermatologists recognize this condition as “sleep wrinkles.”

Before you start setting back your alarm clock, you should know that this problem has nothing to do with the amount of sleep you get each night. Rather, sleep wrinkles occur because of the position you sleep in. If you typically sleep on your side or face down in the pillow, you are putting unnecessary pressure on your face. The result is similar to what happens as a result of making facial expressions: your skin creases and, over time, those folds begin to turn into lines even when no pressure is applied.

Checking for sleep wrinkles is relatively easy. If you notice fine lines forming on your face, especially if you favor one side during sleep, you can simply apply pressure to that side of your face. If your skin begins to fold in the same areas that your notice fine lines forming, chances are you’re developing sleep wrinkles. Fortunately, the problem is almost as easy to solve as it is to diagnose: just sleep on your back.

Changing your sleeping position can be difficult, especially if you want to make it a habit. Here are a few tips to help you sleep on your back and get rid of those sleep wrinkles:

  • Practice sleeping on your back when you aren’t asleep. Just lie on your back in bed for 15 minutes every day. You will develop muscle memory, making this position more natural for you when it’s time to hit the sack.
  • Put a pillow behind your knees. Elevating your knees slightly can make sleeping on your back more comfortable by adding a little extra support.
  • Get a memory foam pillow. They contour to the shape of your head, cradling it in the optimum position. This encourages your body to stay in the same position throughout the night.

Of course, you can always treat your sleep wrinkles later using Xeomin, dermal fillers, laser treatments, or one of our many other treatments. But you may be able to stave off the wrinkles a little longer just by changing your sleeping position. Sleep tight!

Knowing Which Fats Will Help Your Body Stay Fit, Not Fat

In light of the FDA attempting to rid American processed food of trans fat, we want to take the time to remind you that not all fats are bad for your body. Fats are essential to every diet. They give energy, help cell growth, protect our organs and keep us warm in the winter. However, many of us do not associate healthy eating habits with our diet and tend to take fat consumption overboard. Though the U.S. (obesity rate 31.8) is now behind Mexico (obesity rate 32.8) for the most obese country in the Western Hemisphere, the fat epidemic is one that leads to increasing statistics in heart disease and diabetes. The bad fats are the ones to blame as well as our habits. The point is that the elimination of trans fats from food is a step in the right direction to cutting out bad fats from our diet.

The best step to distinguishing between good fats from the bad is spending a little extra time in the grocery store to read the labels. Finding products that are low in saturated fats, trans fats and cholesterol, foods with the lowest collective total are a good way to start eliminating bad fats.

How are Good Fats Healthier than Bad Ones?

The average American consumes about 45 percent of their calories from fatty foods. Many of us may believe that this is too high, and they are right. The American Heart Association’s Nutrition Committee reports that the total fat intake of a person’s calories should be less than 25 to 35 percent each day. As far as trans fat intake, men and women should allow less than one percent to their total daily calories. All this and still not a good thing about fat anywhere, well now here is the good about fats.

The unsaturated fats do what trans fats and saturated fats fail to do for our bodies, provide healthy nourishment that helps lower cholesterol and reduces heart disease. Unsaturated fats are split into polyunsaturated fats and monounsaturated fats. Polyunsaturated fats in food products are found in:

  • Vegetable oils
  • Flaxseeds and walnuts
  • Fatty fish, non-deep fried(salmon, trout, catfish and mackerel)

The other fat your body loves is monounsaturated fats, which is a component used in many countries which reflect lower rates of those affected by heart disease. Monounsaturated fats include:

  • Olives and olive oils
  • Herring and halibut
  • Granola
  • Avocados
  • Hazelnuts and almonds
  • Soy beans
  • Peanut butter

Winning the Battle of the Bulge

Having a fit and lean body is driving men and women to the gym, but there are still many of us who do not see results in places that are unresponsive to healthy fats in our diet and exercise. For those who are inching their way to their weight loss goal can turn to laser liposuction to eliminate those stubborn fat cells, around our bellies.

Pushing out the bad fats from our diet is more rewarding for our bodies than its “amazing” short term flavor. Now that you know the difference between good and bad fats you and your loved ones can fight against the bad artery cloggers at the grocery store. Limit the amount of fat with your total calorie intake to 25 and 35 percent per day and trim your weight down with exercise. Slimming figures can be attained at the end of all the hard work with laser liposuction. Learn more and book your consultation today.

At HCS MedSpa, Regenerative Medicine has merged with Cosmetic Surgery

Now available, the PRP Microneedling procedure – A regenerative, collagen-induction therapy for SKIN TIGHTENING, WRINKLE REDUCTION, SCAR & STRETCH MARK IMPROVEMENT, HAIR GROWTH & STIMULATION which uses the Dermapen®, an automated microneedling device, for percutaneous injection of Platelet-Rich Plasma  (PRP).

The PRP Microneedling procedure is an exciting cosmetic treatment which combines the collagen induction therapy from automated microneedling using the Dermapen® with the regenerative medicine component of percutaneous injection of platelet-derived growth factors from platelet-rich plasma (PRP).  A plethora of cosmetic applications have emerged for PRP Microneedling, which includes Face & Neck Rejuvenation (skin tightening, wrinkle reduction, acne scars, scalp hair growth & stimulation) and Body Area Rejuvenation (scar & stretch mark improvement).

The future of aging gracefully may reside in our own cellular DNA, literally.  Not only does genetics play an enormous role in how our appearance changes over time with chronological aging, but our stem cells and growth factors which nourish our skin and subcutaneous tissues, play a key role in allowing us to age more gracefully.  It is not enough to simply eat nutritiously and avoid sun and ultraviolet light exposure to our skin.  An effective and thoughtful anti-aging program for our skin and skin appendages should also contain a regenerative medicine component when clinically indicated.  PRP Microneedling may be the ticket to graceful aging.  If you need a personal testimonial, just check out the link for ‘Vampire Facelift’ Popular Among Celebrities to see how Dr. Hogue (age 50 in May 2013) looks after having four PRP facial treatment over the past two years!  50 just may be the new 35!

Rationale for why Xeomin is now the exclusive commercial formulation of Botulinum Toxin type A at HCS MedSpa

Merz Pharma’s Xeomin is an FDA-approved alternative to Allergan’s BOTOX®Cosmetic to temporarily improve the cosmetic appearance of wrinkles & frown lines between the eyebrows in adults.  Xeomin has been used in Europe since 2008 and in the USA since 2011.  Both Xeomin and BOTOX®Cosmetic share the identical active ingredient – botulinum toxin A.  However, BOTOX®Cosmetic has an accompanying carrier protein not shared by Xeomin.  Within one minute after injection into the skin, the carrier protein in BOTOX®Cosmetic detaches and its remaining bioactive neurotoxin form  (botulinum toxin A) becomes  the same as and identical to Xeomin.  Since Xeomin is a pure neurotoxin without any additives, it has the theoretic advantage of being less likely to develop antibody-mediated resistance in patients when compared with BOTOX®Cosmetic.  Both commercial formulations have similar safety, dosing equivalency, and clinical efficacy profiles.

My commitment to my patients to maintain affordable pricing ($10/unit for Xeomin as compared with $12/unit for BOTOX®Cosmetic) for Botox injections at HCS MedSpa for the cosmetic treatment of wrinkles is very important to me.  Since Botox injections are routine and important for my patients, I feel the need to keep costs down for my patients.  I have used both Xeomin and BOTOX®Cosmetic in my cosmetic surgery practiceI have found them to be clinically indistinguishable in all respects, including safety, dosing, clinical efficacy, and duration of action for the cosmetic treatment of facial wrinkles & frown lines.  Since Merz Pharma’s Xeomin is cheaper per unit for me to purchase than Allergan’s BOTOX®Cosmetic, I have made the informed decision to choose Xeomin as the exclusive commercial formulation of Botulinum Toxin type A for use at my eight HCS MedSpa clinic locations in Minnesota.

The ‘Vampire FaceLift’ featured in the Gift Bag for 2013 Oscar Nominees is now available at HCS MedSpa!

Immediately after the televised airing of the Oscars on Sunday, February 24th, KSTP Channel 5 news broadcast a televised segment on a new Regenerative Medicine cosmetic procedure which featured Dr. Roger Hogue and his wife & nurse Lori Hogue performing the Vampire FaceLift® at HCS MedSpa in Maple Grove, MN.  During this procedure, dermal fillers are first injected into the face to restore facial volume and contour, followed by injection of platelet-rich plasma into the dermis for facial regeneration and rejuvenation.  Each of the 2013 Oscar Nominees were provided with a $5000 voucher in their gift bag for a Vampire FaceLift®.  While this does not represent the competitive price offering at HCS MedSpa, the expected price range for this procedure at HCS MedSpa is $1600 to $2400, depending on the number of dermal filler syringes used.  Cosmetic surgeon Dr. Roger Hogue prefers to perform the dermal filler session separate from the PRP Facial Microneedling procedure. The usual cost for a PRP Facial Microneedling treatment at HCS MedSpa ranges from $600 to $800.  The usual cost for a syringe of dermal fillers at HCS MedSpa ranges from $400 to $500.  In anticipation of turning 50 in May 2013, Dr. Hogue has personally had two Vampire FaceLift® procedures and several PRP facial microneedling treatments to soften his upcoming half a century milestone. Dr. Hogue believes regenerative medicine cosmetic procedures using platelet-rich plasma such as PRP Facial Microneedling offer the most compelling, natural, stealth, and effective approach for facial regeneration and rejuvenation that the cosmetic surgery industry has to offer.
